I use computers regularly to draw but when it comes to presenting my work I make a conscious effort to create output that looks like it was done by hand or at the least a hybrid of both. I find that anything prepared by hand is far more impressive than computer rendered work and I believe it is becoming more of lost art.
For some time now I have been searching for a font that I find will suit my drawing style and not to take away from my work. I was not happy with what I was able to find and resorted to creating my own font. It was easy and I would like to share how I did it.
I used a free web service at www.myscriptfont.com to create my fonts.

Step 1 -
Visit the site and print off the lettering template. You will be presented two template options; a pdf or png image file choose whatever you're familiar with.
Step 2 -
Step 2 -
Complete the template using a solid black ink and ensure your characters are within the space allotted. I suggest preparing a few with a variety of line thicknesses that way you will have a font ideal for larger sized characters as well as bold type face.
Step 3-
Step 3-
Scan the completed template(s), then visit the site once more to upload and covert to font file. The website will create a custom font file based on the form you completed. Now you have to add this font to your computers font library.
Step 4-
Copy or Save this file to your computer in a place you can find it. When you double click on the font file it will give you an option at the top to install. Once installed you will be able to use your custom font in any program you run on your computer.
That's it, have fun with it.
Here's an example of two fonts I created. If you are interested in a copy of them, just send me a message and I will gladly share it.
One thing to note is that if you send a word document or any other file type that you prepared using your custom font to another system that doesn’t have this font installed on it; the font will default to another style. Prints, images, or pdf files are good ways to share your work prepared using this custom font.
