The Desk: Must have tools for fountain pen users

     These must-have items I use consistently and if you don't already have them, get them it will make your fountain pen experience much more enjoyable.

If you are using bottled ink and filling your pen you must-have the following ;

1) Cotton based cloth. I use an off cut of fabric but I am sure that a piece of an old t-shirt will do. You want a fabric with a relatively tight weave and somewhat absorbent.  I use it to wipe ink off the section and nib area after filling my pens. Paper type products leave fibers between the nib tines and on the feed more often than not. Hand towels have loops in the fabric that may catch when crossing the feed. A good tight weave is ideal.

2) Bulb syringe. I picked up this gem from Shoppers Drug Mart, it is great for flushing water into pens when cleaning. What I really like about this particular model is the ability to pull the front end off for flushing sections free of ink. The opening has a lip or step further inside that decreases even smaller, this provides exceptional flexibility to form a good seal when used on a variety of pens. A word of caution though, considering you are flushing a lot of water through the section/feed in a short amount of time it is a good idea to hold the part in place to avoid it becoming a projectile. Another good tip would be to flush it into a plastic container is case it does fly, the chance of damage is reduced further. The bulb syringe is a great way to flush ink out the section fast.
3) Narrow tip syringe. This one I found at a local art supplies store. The tip needs to be as small as the tip of a sharp pencil. This comes in handy in forcing water into areas through small openings. Can also be used for clean and filling ink cartridges.

Enjoy.
